THE BENEFITS OF LEMONGRASS ESSENTIAL OIL

What is lemongrass essential oil?

The essential oil is an extract from the leaves of the lemongrass plant that grows in tropical and subtropical areas. When looking for lemongrass extract, look for an oil that’s pale coloured with a lemony scent and thin consistency.

Known for its citrusy scent, the lemongrass essential oil is a special type of essential oil that is commonly used in aromatherapy. Inhaling the fresh scent of the lemongrass essential oil (or utilizing the oil in body oils, carrier oils, as well as skin and hair products) has a wide range of benefits. (Lemongrass essential oil shouldn’t be confused with lemon essential oil! As essential oil is the extract of the plant, so the lemongrass essential oil that is extracted from the leaves of the lemongrass plant is very different from the lemon essential oil that is extracted from the peel of a lemon.)

One of the major components of this essential oil is citral, a substance that serves as an antimicrobial (a compound that suppresses or completely destroys micro-organisms, including fungi and bacteria). Also, lemongrass essential oil contains limonene, a substance found to knock out bacteria and reduce inflammation.

What are the main benefits of lemongrass essential oil?

1. Natural Deodorizer Lemongrass essential oil can be used as a safe and natural deodorizer or air freshener. Add a few drops to water and use as a vaporizer, oil diffuser, or as a mist. By adding other vital essential oils, such as tea tree oil or lavender oil, you can create your own preferred fragrance.

2. Skin Care Add lemongrass oil to lotions, shampoos, deodorants, conditioners and soaps. Lemongrass essential oil is an active cleanser and great for women’s skin; its astringent and antiseptic properties makes the lemongrass oil perfect for adding that natural glow to your skin. It sterilizes your pores, strengthens the tissues and serves as a natural toner. By gently massaging the diluted oil into the skin, hair and scalp, you can alleviate muscle pain and headaches.

3. Hair Care Lemongrass oil is great to use as a hair product as it strengthens the hair follicles. If you’re struggling with an irritated and itchy scalp or hair loss, gently rub a few drops of the lemongrass oil into your scalp for just two minutes and quickly rinse. The bacteria-killing and soothing compound will leave your hair glowing, fresh and odor-free.
